I just installed Windows 7 (Enterprise) on Dell Precision M70 Laptop. The M70 previosly had WinXP so this was a custom (full) installation, not an upgrade. I had a complete backup of the XP installation, expecting the full install would erase everything, but my existing folders were all preserved and the old WINDOWS folder was saved as WINDOWS.OLD. I had three driver problems that Window7 could not resolve automatically (WHY NOT???) 1) Sound card. Sigmatel STAC 975X AC97. Solved with Dell R99254 (just search for this).
2) 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' (Device manager error). Apparently this is about a TI PCI chipset in the PCMCIA slot with smart card reader. Solved with Dell R165177 3) Display Adapter was using generic PNP which would not allow wide screen selection (fuzzy). Solved by downloading x86 Win7 driver from NVIDIA 'nVidia - Display - NVIDIA Quadro FX 1400'.
This unzipped into a bunch of files but the SETUP.EXE would not run, with error message 'The NVidia Setup Program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware, setup will now quit.' Solved by Device Manager - properties on the generic PNP driver - Update driver - Browse my computer - Let me pick - Have Disk - (browse to unzipped nVidia and select NVDISP.Inf) - select FX 1400 and install (ignore warning about incompatible with hardware). I have found the 'have disk' option is often the only way to override windows when it's 'too smart' to let you install the correct driver.

ZHANG, the manufacturer does have a Win 7 driver as he said, however the install blows up, now why is another story as in is it a MS problem or Nvidia, but I am thinking it is more of a Dell problem since even though Nvidia produced it, it is still a dell component and have they maybe tweaked it? Thus rendering the nvidia driver useless? Dell claims on their website this machine is not compatible with Win7, however it installs just fine, with the only problem being the video. GreenEng, I am having same problem you did, you say download the x86 driver for win 7 i assume you mean the 32 bit win7 driver for the Quadro FX 1400. I tried your method, it installed but upon reboot, it too blows up.
(BSOD) any other ideas? Thats what I figured, just making sure. I did the same thing but I am beginning to think there is issues with my actual GPU. From what I read today Dell (Nvidia actually) has had problems with these cards heating up and chips actually being un-soldiered because of it.
I was actually using the machine with XP when it first had problems, I reinstalled the drivers with no luck so I thought what better time to install Win7 on this machine than now. Hoping of course in the process it would resolve the initial issue (I say hoping, but it was more like, lying to myself). It is looking more and more like the card itself is jacked up on the hardware side when it gets into doing some more graphic oriented stuff, or in this case, when the drivers to do the more detailed tasks are installed it has problems. A regular Win Generic driver doesn't cause any problems because all it is going to do is provide me with 2 different resolutions and some color, nothing fancy. A note to you GreenEng, make sure you update the video driver and your bios to the most recent.
From what I understand through my reading is that Dell and NVidia have come out with updates for both the BIOS on the M70 and the GPU to tweak the temp at which the fan comes on for the GPU as well as at what speed it runs in an effort to make the card last longer (not a fix, just prolonging it's miserable existance!). If all you are doing is basic pc stuff you probably have nothing to worry about. I on the other hand put Call of Duty on mine and was probably burning it up because this is when I encountered the problem on XP! Good thing it is a work laptop, bad thing is, I am IT! I am my own worst end user!!
Guess it is time for an upgrade!! Good luck to you! Hi GreenEng Thx for a driver instalation description. Everything works except installing display adapter.
I went to nVidia and pick up Download Drivers QUADRO QUADRO FX Series QUADRO FX 1400 WIN 7 32 version 191. Install driver with error message as you mentioned. However while trying to install manually with NVDISP.inf I got error: The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. I also went to the archive of drivers and tried all drivers since version 185. I guess that I download different driver than you did. Can you please specified it? (version, download link) I've got Windows 7 Profesional, but I hope that it is not a problem. Windows 7 ultimate ingles iso.
1) Regarding the sound driver, I just wanted to add here for anyone that was Googling for a solution to error code 40: your default user in Windows 7 does not run applications as an Administrator by default. So when you download and run R99254.exe, you'll get an error that says the program failed to unzip everything properly with an error code 40. I resolved this by typing cmd.exe into the Start Menu-Search bar and right clicking on the program and selecting 'Run as Administrator.' Then I changed directories to the Download folder where I downloaded R99254.exe and ran the program like normal. There may be a faster way, but this worked for me.
